Burke County to automate surplus‑property sales through GovDeals under proposed resolution

Burke County staff on Dec. 1 proposed a procedural change to automate the disposition of declared surplus real property by posting properties on GovDeals, a third‑party online auction platform.
Mr. Matthews explained that the county has built an online inventory of surplus property and has seen increased listing volume. Under the proposed resolution staff would follow the same legal parameters used for other surplus assets—set a reserve price, allow online bidding for the statutorily required period and then return results to the board for final approval. Treasury deposits and attorney review would be handled through the automated process, and the public marketing website would remain unchanged.
Supporters said the change should broaden the buyer pool, reduce media advertising fees and simplify bidder interactions. Commissioners asked whether current bidders could be migrated to the GovDeals process; staff said they planned to contact existing bidders and walk them through the transition.
The resolution was left on the consent agenda; staff said specific properties would still be brought to the board for final action after posting and required waiting periods.
