Bryan ISD spotlights student athletes and expands youth partnerships with Boys & Girls Club and local coaches

At the Bryan ISD board meeting, Executive Director of Athletics Derek Rush recognized student athletes from Bryan High, SFA Middle School and three intermediate campuses for recent cross-country, volleyball and football accomplishments, and highlighted volunteer coaches who support intramurals and invitational tournaments.
Rush and presenters emphasized partnership work with the Brazos Valley Boys & Girls Club; Rhonda Watson said the club provides transportation, facility access, daily meals and mental-health coordination for member-students and helps run invitationals that give intermediate students competitive experience. "Getting them there is a huge boon to our mission," Watson said, urging continued collaboration.
Coach Jackie Sherrill described plans to launch a youth sports program that will include combines, camps and a spring championship and ultimately expand to a fall league. He said the program will focus on fifth- and sixth-grade participants (with some fourth graders by maturity), and stressed sustainability through a non-profit/advisory board and local partnerships. "We'll have combines. We'll have camps, and then we'll do a spring league and have a championship," Sherrill said.
Dr. Mike Thornton (coaching academy founder) and the district's athletic consultant, Kim Thornton, also described coaching-training programs and a 'Future Coaches of Texas' chapter model that would let high-school students gain coaching experience and credentials. The board encouraged continued outreach to PE teachers and campus staff to recruit participants and to coordinate schedules with existing after‑school providers.
Upcoming events noted in the meeting include a Boys & Girls Club–hosted invitational and a football invitational at SFA. Rush asked the community to "come out and cheer those guys on," and thanked volunteer coaches and parents for their support.
