Board highlights schools and community partners; parents urge action on struggling campuses and student health
Summary
Trustees recognized four AISD high schools on the US News list and Arlington Charities for partnership; public commenters praised diabetes care and urged urgent action on D- and F-rated campuses ahead of a TAP/TIP presentation.
Trustees opened the Nov. 20 meeting with recognitions and public comment.
Chief Communications Officer Taina Northington introduced Webb Elementary student Aviel Estrada, who led the pledges. Northington then recognized four district high schools — Martin High School, Seguin High School, Arlington College and Career High School, and Arlington Collegiate High School — for placement on the US News & World Report best-high-schools list.
The district also presented a Community Partner Award to Arlington Charities; representatives described food-distribution programs including mobile food markets, home delivery for seniors and a drive-through service in partnership with AISD’s food and nutrition department.
In public comment, Alice Bleecker described her granddaughter’s experience with type 1 diabetes and commended school nurses and staff for support — including the use of continuous glucose monitoring in district schools. Joanna Cardoza urged the board to address D- and F-rated campuses, calling for urgency around leadership, accountability and family engagement before districts attract TEA intervention.
Board members thanked the speakers and noted that later agenda items would address turnaround and improvement plans.
