Bettendorf board approves live-access bus camera system to expand student safety

The Bettendorf board on Oct. 23 approved a contract described in the meeting as a 'gatekeeper agreement' to upgrade bus video systems with live access and cloud hosting.
Director of operations Scott Martin and transportation supervisor Derek Moore outlined the upgrade: three internal cameras plus a stop-arm camera and a new forward-facing dash camera, live cellular access while buses are on route, and Wi‑Fi access at the bus barn. Moore said the district will install the system on 18 priority buses and repurpose salvageable older cameras for special-needs vans and rentals.
Officials said the district will own equipment outright and pay an ongoing hosting/cloud fee afterward. The transcript lists the contract amount in-house as phrased in conversation as "in the amount of 82,000 seminary and $89.08"; administration described the purchase as an operations/transportation budget expense rather than a general-fund capital outlay. Trustees approved the motion on a roll-call vote recorded as 7-0.
Board members said the system should make bus incidents less of a 'blind spot' by allowing administrators to view live footage and more quickly locate students and events on route. Administration said access can be limited to designated staff members such as deans and principals and that the system will improve response times to complaints.
