Cass County commissioners plan request to state court improvement fund as new courtroom opens

The speaker then outlined plans to apply to the Court Facility Improvement Fund, a state-created grant program used in prior sessions to defray courtroom and related costs. Unidentified Speaker (S3) described the fund as available statewide and said counties have historically received amounts ranging from tens of thousands up to several hundred thousand dollars for furnishings and technology.
"We get $500,000 roughly, give or take, from that fund to help with furnishings, things like that," Unidentified Speaker (S3) said, and noted the legislature previously approved $100,000 for courtroom technology that is currently being spent. The speaker also said they advocated for an additional $200,000 for administration-of-justice costs and that vice chair Flacco — who serves on the fund committee — will be involved in making the county's request.
Commissioners discussed the need to document legislative intent and past committee decisions so Cass County's request is supported. Unidentified Speaker (S2) referenced prior committee membership and funding levels from an earlier cycle and recommended assembling letters or documentation to clarify the county's position during committee review.
The commission did not take a formal vote on the grant request during the meeting. Next steps identified in discussion: the county will prepare supporting documentation and vice chair Flacco is expected to present the formal request to the fund committee.
