Committee tables AI-use policy after extended debate; task force to return with revisions

The committee engaged in a lengthy discussion about a new district policy on the use of artificial intelligence (IJNDB). The proposal — developed with input from the district’s AI task force and external model-policy resources — would have established initial expectations for transparency, academic integrity and data protections tied to district-owned devices and systems.

Miss Caldwell, co-chair of the AI task force, described the document as groundwork for a living policy and said staff planned annual reviews to keep pace with rapid change. Several committee members and staff raised concerns about scope, enforcement, the need for clearer definitions of "developmentally appropriate use," and how the district would handle personally identifiable information (PII) and third-party AI platforms. Members also discussed whether students should be allowed to create personal accounts on public AI platforms from district devices and how attribution requirements would be operationalized.

Following discussion, an initial motion to adopt the policy failed. The committee then voted to table the policy and asked the AI task force and policy subcommittee to return with revised language that better defines developmental standards, expands protections around PII/data governance, and clarifies enforcement and teacher supports. Staff indicated the task force will present more detailed recommendations to the policy subcommittee before the committee takes a second read.
