Gabriel Zainun, a substitute teacher and Bronx resident, told the joint Community Board 11 meeting on Nov. 13, 2020, that local bike infrastructure on streets such as Morris Park Avenue and Eastchester Road is unsafe and that unprotected lanes are routinely used for parking, forcing riders into traffic.
"I shouldn't have to put my life at risk like this," Gabriel said, describing double parking, dooring risk, and sections where painted lanes function as parking strips rather than bike lanes. He urged installation of protected bike lanes (examples discussed included parking-protected designs and single-side protected lanes similar to Manhattan’s 1st Avenue) and highlighted connectivity benefits from linking Morris Park Avenue to the Bronx River Greenway and Randall’s Island.
Board members and attendees discussed narrow-street constraints, school-bus interactions on Bronxdale, existing protected-lane sections, and design trade-offs. Members asked Gabriel to submit a short email summarizing his concerns and suggested the transportation committee continue to lead the issue. Staff also suggested the public may raise the item at the full board meeting on Nov. 20.
Action requested: Gabriel was asked to email his concerns and the transportation committee will review feasibility and coordinate with DOT and Parks as needed.
