BVSD board trims calendar language, adds neutrality clause on religion at school events and approves consent items

Calendar policy (10.1): Board members debated newly proposed language in ICA that would have required the board to 'honor the public engagement in the development process' when revising tentative school calendars. Several trustees argued that the phrasing was ambiguous and could create unnecessary delay. After discussion, a motion to adopt the revised policy while striking the newly inserted language ('honor the public engagement…') passed on a roll-call vote.
Religion-in-schools policy (10.11, IGAC): Trustees discussed whether language referencing baccalaureate and graduation-related ceremonies left unclear whether the district prohibits religious invocations at other school-sponsored events. A motion was adopted to add a neutrality sentence to the policy stating that "the school district shall not conduct or sanction any service that is religious in nature and shall not include religious invocations or formal prayer at school sponsored events." The motion was seconded and passed on a roll-call vote after members asked questions about exceptions for unofficial student participation at private ceremonies.
Executive session: Earlier in the meeting the board voted to convene into executive session "pursuant to CRS 24-6-402(4)(b)" to receive legal advice on litigation related to the Marshall Fire and on negotiations; that motion was made explicitly on the record by Trustee Lalania Quinlan Ueda and passed. The board reported it would meet in the Glacier Room for that session.
What happened next: The board directed staff to return redlines on long-standing educational-goals policies (ADA/IA) for further review rather than adopting substantive changes at this meeting. Multiple trustees also requested future agenda work on technology use (Chromebook/laptop use) and on how the district approaches outside sources of revenue.
