Public commenters urge transparency and raise policy, prayer and safety concerns

During the public-comment portion of the Nov. 24 meeting, several members of the public addressed the Catawba County Board of Education on a range of concerns.

Lynn Dorfman delivered a tribute to the late Dr. Leslie Barnett and urged the board to consider Barnett’s educational experience when selecting a replacement, saying Barnett ‘‘touched and improved lives’’ and was the only educator serving on the board before her death.

Kimberly Turk criticized a proposed employee social media policy, saying provisions that would hold employees accountable for material others post or that could bar off-duty speech felt overly broad and could intimidate employees. Turk objected to language that could hold an employee responsible for posts a friend tags them in or for content resulting from hacking.

Lawrence Wiedemann objected to the board’s addition of a pre-meeting Christian prayer, asserting government endorsement of a single religion is inconsistent with the First Amendment and calling the practice ethically wrong even if board members consider it permissible.

A former teacher, identified in the record as Greg (Craig) Meadows, alleged systemic failures, claiming instances of abuse, neglect and cover-ups within the district and calling for transparency and accountability.
