The New Canaan Board of Selectmen on Dec. 2 unanimously approved travel and equipment requests aimed at strengthening local public-safety operations.
Chief Frederic asked the board to authorize up to $1,600 for Officer Oakes to attend occupant kinematics and crash reconstruction training in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, Dec. 8–12, and up to $1,400 for Officer Castro to attend basic School Resource Officer training in Archbald, Pennsylvania, Dec. 15–19. "We're in a little bit of a rush... trying to get her in there before she starts," the chief said of the SRO training, and both travel requests were approved.
The board also approved operational spending for fire and police: a FY26 purchase order with Superior Spring of Hamden not to exceed $20,000 for ladder-truck rear-axle work and other apparatus service; authorization to purchase a new utility pickup truck under a government bid at a quoted price of $74,234.55 to replace a nearly 20-year-old vehicle; and a purchase order with Marcus Communications for up to $22,000 to buy and field-test four Kenwood tri-band portable radios as a lower-cost alternative to Motorola units. Speaker 10, who supported the Kenwood pilot, said the radios "are almost half the cost" of previous portable units and that state radio-system compatibility had been validated during a multiagency exercise.
Finally, the board authorized renewal of the town’s annual dispatching services with Fairfield Regional Communications for $78,000 for July 1–June 30. Presenters said the contract has one year remaining and that they will continue to review future options.
Each of these items was approved by motion, second and unanimous vote.
