Parents press board on school closures, community notice and sale proceeds

John Glover said he supports a modern career center but cautioned the board not to limit student choices. "To make sure that we're not locking students in based on that… the basics — reading, writing and arithmetic — have to remain a priority so children can decide their future," Glover said.
Omari Hussain asked about the planned consolidation of the 81st Street Early Childhood Education Center into Atkins Elementary. He said parents at the affected campus had not been officially contacted and raised concern that the board removed a public‑hearing requirement from policy on Oct. 21. Hussain asked why community engagement appeared reduced and requested transparency on where proceeds from property sales will be directed.
Board members acknowledged the concerns and staff said they have been coordinating with principals and program leads to ensure special needs and accessibility requirements are addressed when consolidations occur. The committee did not take formal action on policy changes during the meeting; the public‑comment concerns were recorded for follow up.
