Board hears district investments in summer professional learning and PLCs

Corey Johnson and building principals summarized the district’s summer professional learning work at the Oct. 6 board meeting, saying administrators and teachers attended the School Administrators of Iowa conference, PLC at Work events and High Impact Teams sessions to strengthen collaborative practice.
Johnson said approximately 16 administrators attended SAI, and the district purchased about 30–35 copies each of Daniel Minahan’s The Behavior Code and its companion for use in book studies and staff professional learning. Principals described bringing back practical strategies: one building implemented a student reflection sheet for students who come to the office after disciplinary incidents to support restorative practices.
Administrators said those conferences and the district’s guided "roadmap" are being used to calibrate standards, improve grading and support professional learning teams that meet weekly. Several principals reported that taking teams to the PLC events produced immediate classroom practice changes and stronger team collaboration.
Board members thanked staff for giving up summer time to attend trainings and noted the district’s strategy of sending teams to develop common language and approaches across buildings.
