Board reviews TSBA audit recommendations; updates proposed for credit recovery, graduation unit policy and special education language
Summary
TSBA audit recommendations prompted proposed changes: lowering the credit-recovery passing threshold from 70% to 60%, reflecting the state-required 22 graduation units while keeping the district’s local 24‑unit expectation, and updating special‑education policy language. Staff recommended adopting TSBA’s drafted policy text; formal board action was not recorded in the workshop transcript.

Cannon County School Board members reviewed TSBA (annual audit) recommendations and staff-recommended policy updates at the Nov. 13 workshop.
Unidentified Speaker 2 said TSBA flagged three policies for updates: 4.21 (credit recovery), 4.605 (graduation requirements) and 6.5 (special education). Staff recommended adopting the language TSBA provided. On credit recovery, staff noted the passing threshold should be 60% rather than the 70% currently cited in district policy.
On graduation requirements, Unidentified Speaker 2 said Tennessee state law requires 22 units to graduate but Cannon County maintains a local expectation of 24 units; staff proposed adding language that states the 22‑unit minimum is required by state law while retaining the two additional local credits.
On special education, staff said policy 6.5 had not been updated for some time and recommended replacing current language with the TSBA‑provided text.
Unidentified Speaker 1 and others asked clarifying questions about policy numbering after TSBA had listed a duplicate 4.21 entry; staff confirmed they had contacted TSBA to correct the numbering. The transcript records discussion and staff recommendation but no final board approval during the workshop.
The policies and corrected numbering will be included in the board packet for formal consideration at a subsequent meeting.
