Bossier Schools honor National Merit semifinalists, support staff and expand military-family supports

Bossier Parish School Board on Oct. 2 celebrated student and staff achievements and announced new supports for military-connected students.
Communications officer Sonia Bales presented a series of recognitions: Benton students Henry Faber and Om Ganapathy were state finalists in the Ronald Reagan Oratory Competition; JJ Mason and Austin Hawkins were named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists; and five students received letters of commendation. Bales invited the public to review the district community report and podcast that spotlighted these accomplishments.
The board and district partners also presented employee awards. Bossier Federal Credit Union and district staff presented Award of Excellence medallions and the Gold Star employee award; district winners who will advance to state-level competition include Dana McAllister (Sun City Elementary), Alexis Huckaby (Benton Intermediate) and Jerry Fleming (Airline High). Director of human resources Terry Howe introduced the winners and Superintendent Jason Rowland joined to present district-level honors.
On military-family supports, district staff and the Bossier Chamber’s Military Relations Council highlighted that more than 3,200 students in the district are military-connected (about 15% of the student population). The Bossier Chamber, through its Northwest Louisiana Military Support Foundation (a 501(c)(3) foundation), will provide $500 monthly to a chosen Purple Star school to support military-connected families; Holly George explained the Purple Star designation and the district’s goal of becoming a Purple Star District.
What’s next: the recognitions were celebratory and informational; where awards advance to state competition, winners will be contacted by the district. The $500 monthly support and any program budgets or distribution details were announced as an initiative of the Chamber and the Military Support Foundation; specific disbursement procedures were not specified in the meeting record.
