Chair and superintendent to craft evaluation rubric after stalemate on full-committee revisions

After a contested special meeting earlier this month, the Chariho Regional School Committee on Nov. 18 approved a plan for the chair, in collaboration with the superintendent, to develop a rubric to guide future superintendent evaluations.
The chair summarized three motions from the special meeting: one to have the full committee develop a rubric, a second to delegate the task to a subcommittee, and a third to keep the existing process; each had failed in different configurations and left the committee divided. The chair said she and the superintendent had discussed collaborating on a rubric and that attorney John Anderson supported that path as a fair way forward.
Several members supported the chair-superintendent working team while asking for meaningful opportunities to review drafts and contribute. Tyler Champlin moved that the chair work with the superintendent to develop a rubric and bring it to the full committee for discussion and approval; the motion was seconded and carried. Members debated whether the work should include additional stakeholders (principals, teachers, or a member from each town) or whether a small, focused team would be preferable. "I hope members of this committee will be involved, as much as they can be," Champlin said.
The committee directed members to submit suggestions by email and asked that any draft be circulated for discussion rather than presented solely for a yes-or-no vote. The rubric will be returned to the full committee for possible amendment and formal adoption.
Next steps: the chair and superintendent will draft one or two rubric options, solicit member feedback by email, and present the draft rubric to the committee for discussion at a future meeting.
