Parents at Arlington ISD meeting urge better diabetes support and urgent action for struggling schools

At the Nov. 20 Arlington ISD board meeting, public commenters described both personal health‑care needs and community concerns about school performance.
Alice Bleecker described her granddaughter’s diagnosis with type 1 diabetes (diagnosed Oct. 28, 2020), recounted early challenges that led to withdrawing the child from school, and praised district nurses and the district policy allowing continuous glucose monitors. "Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder... a type 1 diabetic is insulin dependent from the moment of diagnosis," Bleecker said, thanking staff for the lifesaving supports that helped her family return students safely to school.
Joanna Cardoza, an Arlington resident and Sam Houston High School alumna, told trustees that one‑third of AISD campuses are rated D or F and urged urgency to support low‑performing schools, citing teacher turnover, lost special‑education testing requests and large class sizes for emerging bilingual learners. Cardoza warned of the risk of TEA intervention if progress is not accelerated and requested concrete district action plans.
Administrators acknowledged both speakers and pointed to a later presentation on district turnaround and improvement plans that evening.
