Board approves Living Well tiny-house MOU, YMCA Y-Learning MOU, FY2027–2033 CIP priorities and foundation donations

Living Well Earth Stewards MOU: The board approved an updated memorandum of understanding to continue the partnership that allows Jordan Matthews, Northwood and Seaforth high school construction classes to build 400–600 square-foot tiny houses on campus with licensed tradespeople supporting the work. The motion to approve the MOU passed by voice vote after a brief procedural question about the title length.
YMCA Y-Learning MOU and Power Scholars: The board approved a memorandum of agreement with the YMCA of the Triangle to provide after-school Y-Learning services at Virginia Cross Elementary (minimum 60 students) and heard data from the Power Scholars summer program showing roughly 300 students served with measurable literacy growth; presenters outlined grant funding and the district’s operational contributions.
FY2027–2033 Capital Improvements Program (CIP): Assistant Superintendent Chris Blyce and Director Randy Drumheller presented the proposed CIP that will be submitted to the county manager and commissioners. The proposal reprioritized projects (life-safety, capacity expansion, MEP, facility upgrades), moved the Silcote school wastewater replacement off scheduled borrowing back to future projects to reduce immediate borrowing needs, and adjusted timing for roofing and HVAC work to address life-cycle concerns. The board moved to approve the proposal as presented and the motion passed by voice vote.
Chatham Education Foundation donations: The board approved donations reported by the Chatham Education Foundation: $10,000 directed to support the tutoring program and $25,000 to assist with the first year of an IXL assessment program for high school students. Board policy requires approval of gifts in excess of $5,000.
NCSBA voting delegates: The board approved the slate of four voting delegates for the upcoming North Carolina School Boards Association conference.
