Board schedules Lighthouse charter public hearing, adopts budget calendar and appoints budget committee members

The Coos Bay SD 9 board scheduled a virtual public hearing at noon on Friday to accept public comment on Lighthouse School’s application to continue its charter contract and discussed financial items included in the October check register.
Marina Wright, the district finance director, told the board the district’s financial system had been down for several days and flagged a few significant October expenditures: a roughly $45,000 payment to the Ashland Family YMCA for outdoor school and a roughly $194,000 payment to Lighthouse Charter School recorded as a state-school-fund pass-through. “That is the state school fund pass through. Coos Bay School District receives 1 payment from ODE every month, and then we issue out a check to [Lighthouse],” Wright said during her report.
Separately, the board adopted a proposed budget calendar for fiscal year 2026–27 after discussion. A motion to adopt the calendar was moved and seconded and passed by roll-call voice vote (Derek, Mady, Arnie, Kim and the chair voting aye).
The board also voted to appoint Debbie Springsteen and Annie Pollard to fill two open positions on the budget committee and said it will continue recruiting for a third vacancy. In other business, the board voted as a district to endorse Janet Holland for an OSBA (Oregon School Boards Association) Legislative Policy Committee position and agreed to forward the official ballot to OSBA.
The Lighthouse charter continuation hearing was set as an informational virtual session to take public comment only; no final board vote on the charter will occur at that hearing, staff said, and the district will record and share the meeting materials.
Board members asked staff to ensure the community is notified about the hearing and to send the Lighthouse administration and parents an invitation to participate, and staff agreed to provide links and additional materials to board members.
