Cass County board hears local coordination plans after SNAP pause; United Way, food banks mobilize

During the same November meeting of the Cass County Human Services Advisory Board, board members described local efforts to respond to a temporary pause in SNAP benefits and to prepare for community needs.

An advisory board speaker outlined local coordination with state and interim commissioners, noting that Cass County leaders met with partners including United Way, the Emergency Food Bank and Great Plains Food Bank, and contacted the county’s seven school districts to organize messaging, volunteer recruitment and distribution plans. The speaker said Northern Cass School District had already reported its office was “overflowing with food” as local communities prepared to help.

The board discussed ideas for pop‑up distributions and how to reach rural areas and senior centers in Cass County. The county expects a need for volunteers and donations; United Way agreed to amplify local messaging and the Emergency Food Bank planned to provide details on service points.

Board members also checked operational readiness: staff reported Monday call center levels were busy but not above recent norms, and wait times were manageable though slightly higher in the afternoon at the time of the meeting.

The board thanked county staff and partner organizations for rapid coordination and noted that more messaging materials (posters and points of contact) would be shared by county communications and partnering nonprofits. No formal motions or funding decisions were made on the local response at the meeting.
