Chester-Upland reports strong student survey turnout, expands restorative-practices and mental-health partnerships

Dr. Wilson gave the board a progress report on student services, saying survey response rates are high and the district is moving to deepen restorative-practices work and mental-health partnerships.
"Currently, we have, for our student completion so far, over 70 percent of our students in grades 3 to 12 have completed the survey. That's critically important because that represents approximately 1,700 of our grade 3 to 12 students," Dr. Wilson said, adding that results will inform recovery-plan decisions and support implementation.
Wilson described restorative-practices professional development: 35 educators and staff completed part 1 of a multi-part training series intended to build school-based champions, and students will be part of "student team of champions" to support peer mediation and restorative approaches. The current in-person iteration aims to deepen engagement beyond prior virtual training.
On student mental health and community support, Wilson said the district is working with partners including the Lincoln Center and the Chester Coalition to listen to students and expand services. He said scheduling and planning are underway for additional student listening sessions and community-based support.
In light of Crozer's closure, Wilson said the district is coordinating with the Delaware County Health Department and other partners to identify resources and schedule immunization clinics and other supports across district schools. He named Chestfriend (as referenced in the discussion) among groups exploring expanded support, and said some partners are preparing to increase services pending required regulatory steps.
Board members asked for detail on which grades participate in restorative practices; Wilson said the initial student component focuses on middle and high school. He also said the district will share more detailed student-output information in an upcoming meeting.
No formal actions were taken during the report; Wilson said more detailed findings will be presented at a future board meeting.
