Bryan ISD spotlights teachers, students, community partners and launches PAWS comfort-dog program

Trustees opened the Nov. 12 meeting by recognizing teachers and staff across campuses, accepting a Rotary Club grant to fund OSHA-30 certification for CTE students, celebrating CTE awards and Esports rankings, and introducing June, the first comfort dog in the district's PAWS program.
The Bryan Independent School District board meeting on Nov. 12 opened with a series of recognitions for students, teachers and community partners.
Linda Taplet, principal at Fannin Elementary, introduced and praised music teacher Sherry Smith for leadership of grade-level musicals and community performances. Becky Luna of SFA Middle School recognized seventh-grade math teacher Amanda Owen for early-career achievements. Coach Rhodes from Crockett Elementary and Kevin Davis from the maintenance department were also honored for exemplary work.
Laura King, director of career and technical education, and representatives from the Bryan Rotary Club announced a $2,025 gift to support OSHA-30 certification testing for MC Harris CTE students. CTE staff said the district was named a CTE District of Distinction for the second year in a row and highlighted strong certification numbers, business partnerships and an SFA Esports team ranked nationally.
The Education Foundation reported its largest-ever teacher grant distribution — 57 classroom grants totaling $150,000 — and staff introduced June, the first trained comfort dog placed through the PAWS program at Kemp Carver Elementary. Cara Peters, June's handler, described early successes in classroom visits and the dog's positive impact on students and staff.
Trustees and staff repeatedly thanked volunteers, business partners and the community-led YES committee that campaigned for the bond. Board members emphasized the role of community engagement in achieving the election results.
