CHS theater students ask board for help raising $30,000 to attend regional conference

Charlottesville High School theater students appeared at the Nov. 6 school board meeting to celebrate competitive success and ask for community support to fund travel to the Southeastern Theater Conference.
Aaron Eichlerst, the district's fine-arts coordinator, said the CHS one-act earned top-two honors at the Virginia Theater Association competition and qualified to represent Virginia at the regional Southeastern Theater Conference. "This incredible group of 45 student performers led by their talented director, David Beckert, captivated audiences and judges," he said.
Students told the board the experience matters personally and educationally. Mia Gold said theater helped her overcome social anxiety and gave her a voice; Ixchel Paz Gonzales, Esmee Ogden Amt and Aiden Claire described professional development opportunities and the trip's once-in-a-lifetime value. Students and community members asked the board to help amplify fundraising and connect the troupe with local nonprofits and philanthropists.
Eichlerst said the program faces a $30,000 gap for travel and production costs and plans fundraising performances (an annual musical, talent shows and improvisational nights) and online donations through the theater website to defray expenses.
Board members and residents praised the students and encouraged community outreach. Staff noted fundraising plans and suggested channels the group can use to broaden community support ahead of the regional competition.
