The Bangor City Finance Committee recorded acceptance of a $7,500 donation from Fidelity Charitable on behalf of the Miles Spryer Charitable Fund and recommended the funds be used to assist Bangor residents through the Department of Public Health and Community Services.
"We've been receiving donations from the fund for many years, and we receive it about once a year," Stephanie Kimball, finance director, said, describing the fund's prior practice and how recipient organizations are selected.
Kimball told the committee staff expects continued increased demand for assistance because of the current federal government shutdown and interruptions and reductions in SNAP and LIHEAP benefits. The committee asked whether the fund is awarded to the same program group each year and requested a clear accounting of how the money is spent so members can see specific allocations next year.
Committee members agreed the current suggested designation—to use the funds for residents in need and for homelessness-related supports—was reasonable. The motion to forward the acceptance and appropriation to the full council for confirmation was made and the item will appear on the next council agenda.
