Fire/EMS staff explained the device reduces the need for manual CPR in the back of an ambulance and improves the safety and effectiveness of chest compressions. Staff said the machines have produced favorable clinical outcomes locally, describing "return of spontaneous circulation" in some cases. The item was already budgeted in this year's budget, according to staff.
A motion to approve the resolution authorizing the purchase was seconded and carried by voice vote. Staff also said the units come with service agreements and that life expectancy with maintenance is measured in years; the department will pursue free shipping if possible.
The purchase was presented as completing the fleet deployment rather than replacing an existing unit.
