CANTON, Ga. — Staff told the Canton City Council on Oct. 2 that eight construction bids were received for the South Canton Park project, ranging from $7.6 million to $12 million plus a $500,000 owner’s allowance. Staff is reviewing references and expects to bring a contract to council for approval once evaluations are complete.
Parks project manager Mister Hooper said the project remains consistent with the approved design — including elevated walkways and tree canopy features — and that approximately one‑third of the park area will be devoted to off‑leash or dog‑use amenities with the remainder for other park uses. The city has a $2.2 million grant committed to the project; remaining costs are planned to be covered by SPLOST and impact fees and the project was budgeted over multiple years (about $6.0 million budgeted for FY2026 as noted during the meeting).
Councilmembers asked how this project compares to county parks and whether amenities would be phased, and staff said South Canton Park is intended to be fully built out under the current design while noting counties sometimes build passive green spaces first and add amenities later. Hooper also said he will check comparative details for council.
Staff indicated they would present a contract and a contract amendment with the engineering firm TSW (not to exceed $101,000) for inspection services at a future meeting.
