Columbus council adopts IAFF amendment and funds annual firefighter physicals

The Columbus City Council on Nov. 3, 2025 adopted Resolution R25‑140 to amend the collective bargaining agreement with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 1575. The resolution adds annual physicals for career staff, provides paramedic wage adjustments and removes an approved material requirement for uniforms.
Council also approved a $42,690 quote from Frontline Mobile Health to provide annual physicals for the fire department’s career staff. Fire Chief Ryan Gray outlined the rationale for annual medical screening, citing elevated occupational risks for firefighters including cancer and cardiac events, and referenced recent NFPA guidance for comprehensive medical programs.
Gray said some firefighter cancers and cardiac events are linked to on‑the‑job exposures and that annual NFPA‑aligned physicals can enable early detection and reduce preventable line‑of‑duty deaths. “Annual NFPA compliant physicals are a proactive safety measure. They protect the firefighters who protect everyone else,” Gray said.
The council approved both the resolution and the Frontline Mobile Health quote by motion and voice vote. The Frontline contract is to provide annual medical exams to support early detection and build health‑and‑wellness data for the department; specific implementation timelines and reporting requirements were not specified in open session.
