The Chester Planning Commission on Oct. 8 unanimously recommended that city council approve a zoning amendment intended to move construction and tradesmen headquarters out of mixed-use and residentially oriented commercial districts and into industrial districts.
Planning staff said the amendment's purpose is to prevent the growth of yard-storage and compounded office-storage uses in areas intended for traditional mixed-use, housing and street-fronting commercial activity. "We've been getting a number of these proposals for these types of uses which were never defined before," staff said, and explained the amendment would permit such headquarters primarily in light-, medium- and high-industrial districts where they are more appropriate.
A commissioner moved the motion to recommend approval; the motion was seconded and carried on a recorded voice vote.
The action is a recommendation to city council and will be forwarded for the ordinance amendment's first reading and subsequent public hearings as outlined by staff.
