Arkansas City commissioners voted to adopt an ordinance amending Article 20 of the municipal code to allow limited front-yard carports in neighborhoods that lack alley access.
A presenter said the change responds to numerous requests after a damaging hailstorm that left some residents seeking front-yard carports to protect vehicles. The amendment creates a special exception to the normal 25-foot front-yard setback, allowing a five-foot front setback for carports in qualifying neighborhoods. Conditions include paved driveways, a three-sided open carport structure (not a converted garage), a maximum width of 18 feet and construction materials similar to the primary residence to avoid portable metal carports.
The planning commission held a hearing Nov. 11 and recommended approval, a presenter said. Commissioners discussed documentation required for permits and confirmed applicants must apply for a permit and provide a basic drawing of the proposed structure before approval is issued.
A roll call was recorded in the transcript where commissioners responded in the affirmative and the ordinance passed.
