Augusta agrees to buy 609 N. School St. for future municipal development at $207,000

The Augusta City Council on Oct. 20 approved a purchase contract to acquire property at 609 North School Street for future municipal building development.
Staff said the parcel — Lots 3, 4 and 5 in Block 25 of the original town of Augusta — became available and was identified as strategically adjacent to existing city property near Frisco Plaza and the Frisco Depot. The negotiated purchase price in the contract is $207,000; staff said that closing is anticipated soon after the start of the new year. Closing costs are not included in the $207,000 price and staff said they will be split 50/50.
Under the motion approved by council, the mayor was authorized to sign the purchase contract. Staff said a tenant currently occupies the building under a short-term lease that likely runs to mid-2026 and that a property management company would manage the short-term transition if the city completes the acquisition.
Council members described the purchase as a step toward long-term strategic planning for municipal facilities and accepted staff's recommendation to secure the property.
