The Eugene City Council on Nov. 17 held a public hearing on a proposed ordinance to extend the city's franchise agreement with Comcast until June 30, 2027, City Manager (unnamed) said.
The extension would add 18 months to the current franchise term to allow Comcast and city negotiators additional time to resolve outstanding issues caused by unanticipated delays and staffing changes. "This proposed ordinance extends the Comcast cable television franchise agreement until 06/30/2027," the City Manager said, adding that all other franchise terms and conditions would remain the same, including Comcast’s obligation to pay franchise fees for use of the public right-of-way.
Tim Goodman, senior director of government and regulatory affairs for Comcast, spoke as the sole public commenter on the item. Goodman introduced himself as the company’s franchise representative in Eugene and said he hoped the parties would finish negotiations within "maybe 5 or 6 months." He also complimented city staff and expressed a desire to avoid further extensions.
No council members asked questions of staff or the speaker during the hearing, and the mayor closed the public comment period without a council vote or formal action on the ordinance at that time.
