Columbus approves MOU to join FEMA Nebraska Task Force 1, citing training and no city cost

Mayor Boeckley and the Columbus City Council on Oct. 20 unanimously adopted Resolution R25‑135 approving a memorandum of understanding with the City of Lincoln to establish the Columbus Fire Department as a participating agency in FEMA Nebraska Task Force 1.

Fire Department personnel (speaker identified during discussion) described the primary benefit as access to specialized training in urban search and rescue, technical rescue and hazardous‑materials response that team membership provides. The chief said participation would allow Columbus personnel to roster on the FEMA team periodically and bring that training and experience back to local operations, and that the arrangement is administered by Lincoln as the agency lead.

During council Q&A, the chief said the team has been deployed to national and international incidents such as structural collapses, earthquakes and floods and noted that participation does not require the city to pay additional funds: Lincoln supplies equipment, training and handles reimbursements through FEMA. The chief described deployments as flexible; the entire team is not always sent, and the team can be rostered for specific incidents, both locally and elsewhere.

Council members asked for concrete examples of how the partnership would operate during a local incident (flooding) and were told that resources could be requested and sent as needed; the chief also noted the team had supported responses to a recent building explosion in Fremont. Council members praised the fire department for being invited to participate and approved the resolution without further changes.

The resolution was moved, seconded and adopted by unanimous voice vote. No additional city funds were reported as required for participation at the time of the vote.

The council adjourned after completing the night's remaining agenda items.
