Council receives first reading to rezone Bennett Center Drive parcel for townhomes

The council held the first reading of Ordinance 23-2025 to change the zoning of a parcel on Bennett Center Drive owned by Bennett Center Ventures LLC from office-professional to medium-density residential to permit a townhome development.
Planner Miss Stahl presented maps and staff recommendations showing the parcel’s proximity to Wade Hampton, the library and the post office. She said staff and the planning commission recommended approval. Jared Moore, who identified himself as an architect and one of the property owners, said he and his partner intend to create a thoughtfully designed townhome community that aligns with the comprehensive plan and that exterior materials would likely include brick and fiber-cement siding rather than vinyl.
Council members asked whether the project would be subject to the city’s design-review requirements and asked the applicant to provide more detailed elevations and material samples in future submittals. After discussion the council voted to receive the ordinance (first reading) by roll call.
