Chesterfield County Council approved a proclamation recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and heard presentations from local and state service providers about outreach and support for survivors.
Amy Rushing, dementia care specialist with the South Carolina Department on Aging (PD region), introduced free education and care consult services and offered materials and outreach for community groups and facilities. Rushing said the county has "over 900 people" living with Alzheimer's or related dementias and encouraged organizations to contact her for presentations and care consults.
Stacy Short, Chesterfield County service coordinator and counselor for PD Coalition, described October programs and local service statistics. She told the council that from July 2024 through June 2025 the crisis center "serviced 50 victims who have walked through our doors," noted 135 incident reports from law enforcement and outlined events including a purple-day lunch walk Oct. 16, a presentation Oct. 19 and an "In Her Shoes" simulation on Oct. 17 designed to help participants experience obstacles survivors face.
The council voted to accept the Domestic Violence Awareness Month proclamation and will sign and deliver it to community representatives. Short and partner organizations will continue outreach and have provided flyers and contact information for community groups and churches.
