Harlingen commissioners voted unanimously on Nov. 19 to approve $240,000 in materials and city crew work for drainage improvement projects previously approved under memoranda of understanding with Cameron County drainage and irrigation districts.
City engineer Robert Fernandez told the commission the money will buy materials to replace and upsize aging in‑city storm infrastructure that discharges into district-owned ditches. He said the work includes upsizing several undersized outfalls (two existing 24‑inch runs recommended to be 30 inches, and two existing 36‑inch outfalls noted in the plans), lowering some pipes to improve flow, and adding backflow preventers that close once a ditch elevation is exceeded to avoid water returning to neighborhoods. Fernandez estimated the ditch work will create roughly 40 acre‑feet of additional detention at the project sites.
