East Lansing council elects Eric Altman as mayor; Chuck Grigsby named mayor pro tem

At its Nov. 18 meeting the East Lansing City Council elected Eric Altman mayor and unanimously approved Chuck Grigsby as mayor pro tem. The council also adopted the 2026 meeting calendar with a date change and approved routine minutes and agenda items.
The East Lansing City Council on Nov. 18 elected Eric Altman as mayor and swore him into office after a roll-call vote that gave Altman three votes and his opponent two. The council also unanimously approved Chuck Grigsby as mayor pro tem and administered his oath.
Altman was nominated during the council meeting and, after the clerk conducted a roll-call vote, “there are 3 votes for council member Altman,” the clerk announced, and Altman took the oath of office. Mayor Altman then called for nominations for mayor pro tem; Chuck Grigsby was the sole nominee and the council recorded unanimous support. Grigsby took the oath and signed the associated documents.
Also on the consent portion of the agenda, the council moved to adopt the minutes from the Oct. 21, 2025 regular meeting and to approve the Nov. 18 agenda; both motions were recorded as carried. Later in the meeting the council considered the 2026 meeting schedule, adopted an amendment changing the January meeting date from Jan. 27 to Jan. 20, and approved the calendar as amended.
The meeting closed after the council deferred formal boards-and-commissions liaison appointments to a Dec. 9 meeting and voted to adjourn. The mayor and mayor pro tem will take up liaison assignments and other business at future meetings, per the council’s schedule.
