Kingsburg BID advances Swedish phone-booth project planning; SNS offers partial donation

Members of the Kingsburg Downtown BID discussed a proposal to install one or two Swedish-style phone booths downtown and asked the project sponsor to continue work with the city and grant programs.
Presenter Cindy Rekier summarized site photos and preliminary cost estimates and said the booths could be solar-powered to avoid hard wiring; she reported SNS offered to fabricate metal framing at $3,500 per unit and to donate $1,500 toward each unit. Rekier said she had identified less-expensive phone components that could store multiple recorded messages and that the team had photographed prospective locations and noted attractive photo backdrops.
Board members asked whether the proposed locations were listed in order of preference (they were not) and raised questions about ownership and maintenance of planting beds and other public-rights-of-way items, noting many candidate sites overlap existing city-owned flower beds. A member suggested the project should complement—not compete with—existing downtown 'dollar horse' photo features.
Funding was discussed. A board member said a microgrant program of $15,000 could cover the project if eligible, and the group discussed whether such grants require matching funds; members recalled a prior mural grant that was matching. The presenter said she would follow up with the city, pursue any applicable grant matching, and consider presenting at a future city-council meeting or providing public comment to inform council members.
Board members asked to place the item on the January agenda so members could review sites in person and to report back on city collaboration, cost estimates and permit/maintenance responsibilities.
