Florence council proclaims City Government Month, announces events and moves into closed session over litigation

At the start of the caucus meeting Mayor Julia Abishon read a proclamation declaring October 2025 as City Government Month in Florence, citing the Kentucky League of Cities board of directors. The mayor urged residents to join the commemoration and noted the proclamation as part of the meeting's opening.

During the mayor's report the council heard operational announcements: a 3% reduction in the real estate property tax for this year; that Boone County tax collection staff will be available at the city's finance counter; city offices will be closed Monday, Oct. 13 for the Columbus Day observance; fall cleanup and a household hazardous waste drop‑off schedule (with proof of residency and resident‑only participation) were announced; leaf collection dates and a Halloween festival on Oct. 28 at Thomas More Stadium were also publicized. The mayor promoted veteran‑related events and a holiday card contest for seniors.

Council members requested and received departmental updates, including plans to replace flickering skate park lights (sensors ordered, timers reset) and broader parks project planning. The chief announced a donated protective vest for the city's K9 officer from a nonprofit, Invested Inners and Canines, and thanked the group.

Toward the meeting's close the council voted to go into closed session "pursuant to KRS 61.810(1)(c) litigation proposed or pending against or on behalf of the city." Miss Whelan moved the motion, Mr. Wynne seconded and the chair called for the ayes; the motion carried. The council recessed to closed session and did not anticipate further public business that night.

The council did not take public action on ordinances or contracts during the open portion of the caucus.
