Kingsport approves contract to assess and design pool replastering at aquatic center

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen authorized an agreement with Thompson & Litton for professional services to plan renovations at the Kingsport Aquatic Center, including replastering pools and evaluating pump and mechanical systems.
City staff told the board that replastering typically has a 10–12 year service life and the facility has exceeded that span. Planned work would occur after the summer season and be completed before collegiate swim meets the following calendar year. The scope discussed includes drain covers, tile replacement, pump-system evaluation and possible replastering of the lazy river; staff said they will coordinate timing with the YMCA and consider phased options to reduce community disruption.
Aldermen asked for schedules and impacts to swim teams and lap swimmers; staff said they will pursue alternate sites where available and coordinate shutdowns to minimize disruption. The resolution passed by unanimous vote; staff will return with bids and a construction timeline once engineering and design work is complete.
