The Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted Nov. 18 to award the Bays Mountain Otter Habitat construction contract to Burwell Construction Company.
City staff presented the low bid: a base contract of $2,400,000 with a rock allowance priced at $150 per cubic yard, putting total project cost above $2,600,000. Staff said private donations and a grant received last year are contributing to the project’s funding. A pre-construction meeting will establish a detailed construction timeline and next steps.
Board members praised staff and community donors for helping move a long-awaited exhibit to construction. Alderman George called the exhibit “super, super cool” and thanked staff for their work; other members noted the long development process and encouraged public visits when complete.
The board approved awarding the bid and authorized the mayor to sign the agreement and related documents. Staff will return with contract documents and construction scheduling information.
