Englewood’s City Council voted Tuesday to certify the results of the recent municipal election and formally swore in newly elected officials.
The city clerk reported the official Arapahoe County results naming Othaniel Sierra as mayor, Jack Bethel as councilmember for District 2 and Steve Ward as councilmember for District 4. The mayor moved to certify the results and Member Neunkamp seconded the motion. Member Russell stated on the record he would not support certification, saying "it was not unanimous at the county level" and that there were "several election problems within the city." The council certified the results by a 6–1 vote, with Russell recorded as the sole nay.
Municipal Judge Joe Jefferson administered the oath of office to the new members. After the swearing, the clerk confirmed the council had a quorum and members proceeded to nominate and elect a mayor pro tem. Member Ward nominated Tim Anderson, whose nomination won on the first ballot by 4–2 and who will continue serving as mayor pro tem.
Why it matters: Certification completes the formal transition of authority and enables the newly sworn members to participate fully in council business. The dissenting vote drew attention to post-election concerns raised publicly by at least one council member, which the council did not address with a formal investigation during the meeting.
What’s next: New members delivered brief remarks and the council proceeded with recognitions, public comment and its regular agenda.
