East Lansing enacts temporary truck ban on Harrison Road near Glencaron crosswalk

Why it came up: Parents and residents described a hazard at the Glencaron/Northlawn crosswalk near Glen Karen Elementary, saying heavy gravel trucks traveling downhill may be unable to stop safely for crossing guards and children. Staff presented corridor rehabilitation work and preliminary vehicle-classification counts showing relatively low volumes of large semi-trucks during the study period, though residents said some days saw many more large trucks tied to nearby construction and gravel-haul activity.
What the order does: The adopted TCO prohibits operation of FHWA vehicle classes 8-13 on the specified Harrison Road segment; staff told council the order is temporary, that a consultant will present a fuller analysis on Nov. 18, and that the city will prepare a formal resolution as needed. Council asked staff to install signs "as soon as possible."
