Commission approves 2026 street improvement plan, adds Bob Euchre and part of Commerce Street

The City Commission approved the proposed list of streets for the fiscal 2026 Street Improvement Program and amended the staff recommendation to add Bob Euchre Road and the southbound lane of Commerce Street between Fair Park and Wilson.
Robert Hernandez, city engineer, described the SIP selection process based on a 2022 pavement assessment and citizen requests, and said the in-house paving program will cover roughly 10.3 miles in the coming cycle. Hernandez told commissioners the list prioritized residential streets but noted that larger collector streets would be targeted for other funding sources.
Commissioners asked staff to consider spot repairs and to pursue funding through the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization (RGB MPO) and grants for larger collector projects. Commissioner comments emphasized both immediate relief through spot repairs and the need to plan longer-term upgrades to Morris and Roosevelt roads given anticipated growth.
The motion to approve the SIP with the two additions and to authorize staff to begin examining options to expand Morris/Roosevelt capacity passed by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will include the added segments in the design and bid schedule, complete required engineering and proceed to construction in early 2026, and pursue MPO and grant funding for larger collector upgrades.
