Grants Pass — The council held interviews with three candidates for the Urban Area Planning Commission during its Dec. 2 workshop.
Richard Akers described 25 years in Oregon and 15 years in construction; he framed his application around balancing growth with infrastructure capacity and representing the interests of working families and small builders. He said he opposed large‑scale tract development and emphasized transparency in communications between applicants and municipal staff.
JW Oler, owner of Elite Designs Unlimited, described nearly 36 years in architectural drafting and plan review, including service on another city's architectural review board, and argued that his plan‑review experience would help the commission ask the right technical questions on projects such as subdivisions and grading.
Keith Trahearn, a long‑time local real estate appraiser, highlighted detailed local knowledge of historical wetland areas, the need to avoid building on wetlands, and preference for blended zoning that respects surrounding parcels and protects agricultural lands.
Council councillors asked follow‑ups about parking, variances, conflict resolution with neighbors and evidence for candidates’ claims. Each candidate stressed community involvement and a desire to ensure the commission’s land‑use decisions are consistent with local character and future service capacity.
