Council approves three‑year public defender contract for municipal court

North Augusta — The City Council voted unanimously Dec. 1 to authorize a three‑year contract with the public defender of the Second Judicial Circuit to provide indigent defense in municipal court.
City staff told council the agreement will begin in January 2026 and run through December 2028. “The public defender shall be compensated on a flat rate basis of $20,000 per year, paid in 2 installments of $10,000 per,” staff said, pointing to the contract terms and accompanying exhibit.
Staff said the item had been discussed at earlier study sessions and that the city has now received the pricing information needed to finalize the agreement. The resolution was adopted without recorded opposition.
The contract is intended to ensure continued indigent‑defense coverage after the current term ends at the end of 2025; staff recommended the council pass the agreement before year end to avoid a lapse in representation.
