Residents urge moratorium on data centers; council stresses due diligence and legal limits

At the Nov. 17 meeting, resident Lynn Cox asked Maumee City Council to "place a moratorium on any data centers or solar installations until more study is done," telling council that data centers "can consume thousands of acres of land" and raise concerns about utility use, infrastructure, PILOT tax incentives, decommissioning and expected obsolescence.
Cox offered a 40-question list and two pages of references for council consideration. Multiple council members acknowledged the issues and the need for study. One council member said, "I can tell you personally, I would not support a data center here," but noted that "we need to make sure that we, you know, follow some legalities before we can move forward with that." Other council members urged a public process or committee meeting to hear residents and suggested state and federal involvement for broader infrastructure questions.
Council discussion stressed due diligence: members noted that data centers are not inherently bad but that environmental, utility and historical-site proximity concerns (including the nearby Fallen Timbers battlefield) require careful review. Several council members recommended forming a forum or committee to gather public input and to coordinate with county and state economic-development partners if discussions move forward. The council did not enact a moratorium at the meeting.
