City outlines gateway and wayfinding sign plan to boost downtown Park Central

Steve Hall, the city's transportation program manager, presented a gateway and wayfinding signage plan intended to draw visitors to downtown Park Central and better highlight city assets. The plan identifies 25–30 signs in a phased implementation and includes three broad types: static gateway signs, business destination panels (blue), and green points‑of‑interest signs for municipal assets.
Hall said the city hired SignGrafx as the designer and performed field verification of proposed locations. The presentation included mockups for an LED gateway sign at the city line and static Park Central signage, business wayfinding panels, and parking direction signs. Staff noted several utility and VDOT permitting considerations for signs placed at or near the county line and said Miss Utility checks had identified a few conflicts that could affect final placement.
Council members raised visibility and safety concerns for locations at Euclid and the 28/Manassas Drive approaches, suggested exploring LED options for the Park Central sign to promote events, asked about anti‑tagging surfaces and maintenance, and discussed the possibility of collaborating with VRE on signage for the new garage. Staff said the next step is to prepare an IFB and return with a contract authorization after evaluating bids and phasing priorities based on cost.
No contract was authorized tonight; staff will return with an IFB, cost estimates and a recommended phasing plan.
