Multiple residents at the Oct. 7 Long Beach City Council meeting urged the city to provide clearer and more frequent updates on the North Shore bulkhead project after staff told the council the city had received nearly $4 million in state reimbursement.
Linda Giles said the new bulkhead installation ends at Monroe Boulevard and that areas eastward remain unprotected, warning "if we do get another hurricane, that same area that was devastated is going to be devastated again." City staff responded that state reimbursement funds are available for public land only; private bulkheads remain the responsibility of private owners, who will be required to build to the updated code (AFF + 3) when they next obtain permits. Staff said the city will continue public outreach and provide project limits and updates.
Another resident asked whether bulkhead sections in front of Mount Sinai (the emergency department) would be compelled to be upgraded; staff said private property owners are required to bring bulkheads to new heights when they permit replacements but the city cannot force replacement as long as a private bulkhead remains serviceable. Residents asked staff for summary numbers of total reimbursements received to date and for community briefings as significant adjustments are made with FEMA and state partners.
