Board of Control approves up to $7,791.72 for motion sensors at service department

The Norton Board of Control voted unanimously on Nov. 17 to award a contract for motion-sensor installation at the city service department in an amount not to exceed $7,791.72.
The item was introduced by the presiding officer as a purchase to complete security and access functions tied to a recently completed addition. Speaker 4 told the board the sensors are “part of the security system,” and explained they will allow truck drivers to open exterior overhead doors remotely rather than exiting vehicles.
Board members asked whether the devices are monitored or simply function as motion lights. A board member said the devices will work like a garage-door opener and Speaker 4 said the sensors can be adjusted so lights do not automatically shut off while mechanics are under vehicles.
Several members noted the sensors had been missed in the architect’s original specifications for the larger capital project; Speaker 4 said the omission was due to the spec and that the item could be an add-on. A member questioned whether a lower-cost workaround (adding remote buttons to vehicles) would be sufficient, and staff explained the actuator and wiring for the doors still need to be installed for a remote system to operate.
Speaker 5 made the motion to award the purchase and Speaker 2 seconded. The clerk called the roll; all members recorded affirmative votes and the motion carried.
The board moved on to the next agenda item after the vote. No further conditions or implementation schedule was specified in the meeting record.
