Resident describes pumpkin‑recycling, PaintCare paint drop‑off and tree composting for DuPage County

At the DuPage County Stormwater Management Committee meeting on Dec. 2, public commenter Kaye McKean described recent waste diversion and reuse efforts and announced new local services.
McKean said the county’s pumpkin‑recycling efforts ran across three days and that participating towns reported collecting nearly 100,000 pounds of pumpkins so far; at one event she counted about 208 pumpkins before the end of a session. McKean estimated that the pumpkin diversion equated to roughly "10,000 something gallons of water" saved for that portion of the material stream.
She also announced a soft launch of a PaintCare paint drop‑off hosted at SCARCE, where residents will be able to drop off both oil‑based and latex paints for free. McKean said the program will be fully publicized in January and that staff are working with PaintCare to confirm acceptable materials. Finally, McKean said the county is coordinating with township offices to provide Christmas tree drop‑off locations for apartment and condominium residents so trees can be composted rather than landfilled.
The committee thanked McKean for the volunteer organization and publicity that aided collection events.
What’s next: paint drop‑off service will be publicized and fully launched in January; composting plans for trees will proceed through township coordination as described in the public comment.
