At the Oct. 9 meeting the Petoskey City Council received a first reading of proposed amendments to Article 12 and Article 20 of the city’s zoning ordinance intended to clarify language about the length and administration of variances.
City Manager Horn said the changes grew from review by the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Planning Commission after a property on Rosen Division experienced a variance that exceeded the existing 12‑month language. The proposed language, drafted with assistance from the city attorney and reviewed by zoning administrator Lisa Denoyer, clarifies differences between sections and provides for an 18‑month timeframe in some cases to account for projects that take longer to complete.
Horn emphasized this was a first reading and that the city attorney had advised the changes need not be returned to the planning commission for a new public hearing. Councilmembers who spoke called the revised draft clearer and said the additional time could help complex projects. No vote on adoption took place; the matter remains at first reading.
